In recent days, users of the TikTok app in the United States have switched en masse to alternative apps, often of Chinese origin.
This is evident from the overview of the most downloaded applications for smartphones.
The Bloomberg news agency reports that Xiaohongshu – or RedNote outside of China – is now ranked first in the Apple Store rankings in the US. In the Play Store for Android smartphones, RedNote has entered the top ten for the first time.
The app from rival Lemon8 was also downloaded three times more than before. The new users call themselves ‘TikTok refugees’.
China’s ByteDance must sell the American version of its popular video app TikTok by January 19, or it will no longer be allowed to be made available in the US, the Biden administration has ruled. The decision was made on grounds of national security. A case is pending before the US Supreme Court but has not yet ruled on the ban.
Consumers are already switching en masse to alternatives. TikTok has more than 170 million users in the US.
According to Bloomberg, ByteDance is considering selling TikTok to Elon Musk, but the company dismissed this as ‘pure fiction’.
