Prime Minister Trudeau Will Not Go to Trump Summit With Mexican President

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will not travel to Washington this week for a summit with US President Donald Trump and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on a new North American trade treaty.

Trudeau previously told journalists that he is concerned about America’s inability to control the corona crisis.

He also referred to tensions over possible U.S. tariffs on Canadian aluminium. Negotiations on the conditions surrounding the meeting, scheduled for July 8-9, are still ongoing.

The Mexican president will meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, his first trip outside of Mexico since taking office.

López Obrador had publicly urged Trudeau to join him in Washington.

López Obrador added that he will take a coronavirus test before leaving Mexico and that he is willing to do another in the United States if required.
