The Ministry of Defense in Taiwan announced that the Chinese navy was active on a large scale near Taiwanese waters on Tuesday.
Ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang said the Chinese military ships were deployed in the East China Sea, the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, which separates the island from mainland China. The total number of ships was nearly 90, he said.
According to the spokesperson, the deployed military capacity is even greater than in August 2022. China then carried out large-scale manoeuvres in response to Nancy Pelosi, the then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives’ visit to Taipei.
The Taiwanese government had already reported a few hours earlier that there was an increased military presence. In 24 hours, 47 Chinese aircraft and 12 military vessels were spotted near the island. Beijing has not yet confirmed that any manoeuvres are being carried out in the area.
Taiwan has been self-governing and de facto-independent since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, but Beijing still regards the island as a renegade province. Beijing regularly sends fighter jets, drones and warships to put pressure on Taiwan.
